Yakima police responded to a single-car fatal crash late Wednesday night around eleven p-m, which killed one person.

A 26-year-old female was pronounced dead at the scene, just past the intersection of South 96th Ave., and Occidental Road.

Traffic sergeant Scott Grant with Yakima police says the car was going westbound and went off-road, when it appears that she overcorrected the car. She then hit some fruit trees and then a concrete irrigation pump, which caused the car to start rolling and hit the utility pole.

Grant said its most likely that the victim was not wearing her seatbelt, and he reminds people that they are there to save lives.

“I’ve seen it time and time again where people that get into accidents are saved by their seatbelts, and conversely if you’re not wearing, your seatbelt I’ve seen a lot more serious injuries sustained to those individuals,” Grant said. “So, I would just encourage people to just to recognize that the seatbelts are there for your safety.
